Do Virtual Particles prove the Universe created Itself from Nothing?

Some have suggested recently that 'virtual particles' come into existence out of nothing, thereby proving that the universe itself could have come into existence out of nothing (effectively creating itself).

Is this true? What are virtual particles? Do they really come into existence out of nothing? Do they prove that the universe could have created itself?
